Speaking of Freedom:Global Unrest

February 18, 2011

[Sorry to be bombarding you with so many posts. One reason is that I am still learning to do this and sometimes I make mistakes and feel the need to re-post. The main reason for this one, though, is that there are important and momentous events going on all around us and, understanding what is going on is vital to the future of our country and the world, as well as being central to our mission at MCP. I don't profess to be an expert or to have it all figured completely out. I am just trying to share my views and hoping to stimulate a discussion among us. That said, let me get to the subject of this intrusion into your inbox.]

If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them, they must become happy. (Thomas Jefferson)

Most of our states are dealing with similar problems to those that led to the Wisconsin uprising and we can expect similar demonstrations in many of them in the days and weeks ahead. Many are trying to portray the recent unrest in Egypt as some kind of noble uprising akin to our own Revolution and they are claiming that this is what is going on in Wisconsin. Although these events do have a common link, it is not that. The pols and pundits who are saying so either have a wrong understanding of the situation or they are trying to deceive us.

What really links these events, as well as the unrest we have witnessed in recent months in the rest of the world, (remember Prince Charles and his wife being attacked in their limo by an unruly crowd?, Or the riots in Greece, etc...?), is not a spontaneous rising of the spirit of freedom in the breasts of the participants. The common bond they all hold is that the people are suffering financially because, in each case, the government has failed to deliver on promises to provide for the people. Many wise and prudent people have been warning for years that this would be the inevitable outcome of these policies and now the chickens are simply coming home to roost. This will be the outcome when any form of government other than the one our Founders gave us in and through our Constitution is put into practice.

Liberalism/Progressive-ism/Socialism/Marxism, or any other forms of governmental philosophy, are doomed to failure because they are essentially fantasy. They might look good on paper but they don't work in the real world! Fantasy is OK for Disneyland, but not for real life.

The Constitution is based on and in reality because it is based on and in principles. Principles don't change. They are true for all people, in all places at all times. Our Founders called them "self-evident truths". The solution to our problems and those of the rest of the world is to be found only in rejecting the failed Disneyland approach to life and returning to the tried and true principles of the real world which are articulated in our Declaration of Independence and codified in our Constitution.

At MCP we are dedicated to helping facilitate that return. Tomorrow, Saturday, February 19, from 10-2 at the Church of the Open Door on Highway 63 South in Macon, we will take a step in that direction with our "Birth of the US Constitution" course. I hope you can join us.
